Phlebotomy A to Z: Using Critical Thinking and Making Ethical Decisions

Helen Ogden-Grable, MT(ASCP)PBT
Clinical Educator, DSI Laboratories, Naples, FL

Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Identify errors that may be made by phlebotomists in the process of blood collection by venipuncture and capillary skin puncture
  • Relate the concept of critical thinking
  • Analyze the area of ethics; state what it is and what it is not
  • Make ethical decisions

The phlebotomist in the hospital, clinic, or outpatient service center has a major impact on customer service scores for the entire laboratory! A well-trained phlebotomist is a true ambassador for the laboratory--greeting patients and visitors to the facility, as well as employees from other departments. We need to be willing to invest both time and effort in the training of our phlebotomy team members and provide continuing education to maintain and update their skills and knowledge. They need to be included in the evaluation and selection of sharps and other equipment.

Phlebotomists must:

  • demonstrate professionalism by their conduct and appearance
  • demonstrate effective communication skills with the very young to the very old
  • possess integrity and dependability, and be highly motivated
  • follow the AHA Patient Bill of Rights and protect the confidentiality of the patients
  • handle stress without losing their composure.

Critical thinking allows one to make effective decisions and to solve problems. Incorporating critical thinking into the arena of phlebotomy allows individuals to become successful professionals and proud contributors to the discipline of laboratory healthcare.
