"New Beginning Award" at Sacred Heart & St. Joseph's Hospitals
July 6, 2010— Deb Bloom, MT(ASCP), laboratory director, Western Wisconsin Division of Hospital Sisters Health System – which represents Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire & St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls – received the hospitals' "New Beginning Award" on June 22 at the Western Wisconsin Leadership Academy. Ms. Bloom received the award for her dedicated work helping the lab perform more than one million tests annually while improving efficiencies.


 
Michele D. Raible, MD, PharmD, FASCP, 1956 -2010
June 21, 2010— Michele D. Raible, MD, PharmD, FASCP, member of ASCP since 1994, passed away on June 21, 2010 while undergoing treatment for leukemia. She served as deputy head of pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. More recently, she served as associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Michigan. Dr. Raible was deeply committed to the laboratory medicine profession and had also been an active member of PRODS, the Pathology Residency Program Directors Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs.

Dr. Katz Highlighted in Wall Street Journal Health Blog
June 14, 2010— ASCP Teleconference presenter Louis M. Katz, MD, was highlighted on June 14 in a Wall Street Journal health blog. His recent teleconference examined XMRV – a retrovirus that some researchers believe may be responsible for chronic fatigue syndrome.
 
ASCP Letter about Gene Patenting Appears in Boston Globe
February 13, 2010— ASCP President Mark H. Stoler, MD, FASCP, shares the Society's position opposing gene patents in response to a recent Boston Globe editorial on the subject. Dr. Stoler's letter was printed in the major daily publication and can be viewed here.

April 30, 2009—Irina Lutinger, MPH,MASCP, H(ASCP)DLM,FACHE, speaks to U.S. News and World Report about career opportunities in the laboratory. In the article, Lutinger says an impending worker shortage has been slowed by the recession, but there is still a minimal number of incoming lab technologists compared with the retirement rate.

Students Gain Insight into Science of Death
February 23, 2009—Christopher Cold, MD, FASCP, is captured in an article aimed at showing local students the science behind autopsies. He explained to the Marshfield, Wisc.-area visitors that the hit show “CSI” can get results back in an hour, whereas real autopsy results can take up to six weeks.

McKenna Installed as new ASCP President
October 16, 2008—Barbara J. McKenna, MD, FASCP was installed as the new ASCP president at the Society’s Annual Business Meeting on Thursday, October 16, in Baltimore. She has served in various capacities for the ASCP including Vice President, and Member-At-Large on the Board of Directors.
 
 
2000 Mile Ride for Life
September 9, 2008—Dawn D. Wolf, MT(ASCP) blood donation trip will be a ride for life. It's a 2,000-mile trip starting in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 1, and ending in Cedar Key, Fla., around Nov. 5.

August 7, 2008—Jeanette Rubin, MT(ASCP), is very proud of her low ASCP Board of Certification number—#10,779—and well she should be. Today, at the age of 84, she looks back with great satisfaction over a laboratory career that spanned more than 50 years.

Honored as a 2008 Piper Professor
June 17, 2008—Vicki S. Freeman, PhD, MT(ASCP)SC, was honored at a reception on June 17, 2008, at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, for receiving the 2008 Piper Professor Award. The Piper Professor program seeks to bring recognition to outstanding achievement in the teaching profession in colleges and universities in Texas and is sponsored by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.
 
 
2008 SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence
May 8, 2008—Kate Rittenhouse-Olson, PhD, SI(ASCP) helped to found the undergraduate biotechnology program, earning a Dean’s Award for her pivotal contributions during the planning and implementation stages. She is the recipient of the Teaching Award from the 2006 graduating class of the Biotechnology Program and a Certificate of Excellence from the class of 2005.
 
 
ASCP Fellow Receives Lady Bird Johnson Award
April 18, 2008— In addition to starting Clinical Pathology Laboratories (CPL), Charles F. Pelphrey, MD, FASCP also established the first blood bank in Austin. His interest in developing a blood bank came largely from his introduction of the Rh factor and replacement transfusions to Austin.
