Popular Resident Review Sessions at ASCP 2013 Bridge Knowledge Gaps

Monday, July 08, 2013

As a fourth-year pathology resident at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C., Evelyn Bruner, MD, attended all of the Resident Review Mini-Sessions offered at the 2012 ASCP Annual Meeting to prepare for the Board exams. The effort paid off when she took the Board exam last month.

Now a surgical pathology fellow, she highly recommends that pathology residents attend the Resident Review Mini-Sessions offered at ASCP 2013 Chicago, Sept. 18–21. The popular review sessions provide pathology residents an opportunity to spend extended time on selected topics taught by experts in their field and help them identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.

“The instructors are very knowledgeable and know what key points to cover that are relevant to the Board exam.”

Chair, ASCP Resident Council

“The instructors are very knowledgeable and know what key points to cover that are relevant to the Board exam,” says Dr. Bruner, Chair of the ASCP Resident Council. “I will likely go to many of the review sessions this year because they are incredibly informative, regardless of your level of training.”

The review sessions help residents to gain confidence in what they know and identify areas they need to work on to become better pathologists. The sessions cover six competency areas: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

“The sessions are at just the right level for the residents,” says Henry Rinder, MD, FASCP, Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Yale Pathology Residency Program, New Haven, Conn. “They’re casual, not high pressure. I have heard positive feedback from residents who have attended them.”
