Survey Polls Laboratories’ Capacity for Electronic Information Exchange

Monday, April 29, 2013

This month, 12,000 hospitals and laboratories nationwide will be asked to complete the National Survey on Health Information Exchange in Clinical Laboratories, administered by the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology. Results of the survey will provide policymakers with a comprehensive understanding of electronic laboratory information exchange capacity and activity among medical laboratories across the nation.

Currently, important information on laboratory information exchange is being collected from a random sample of approximately 12,000 hospital and independent laboratories, including the volume of test results sent electronically, adoption of standards, current information systems used, and barriers and facilitators for exchange.

ONC will use these survey findings to monitor progress regarding electronic laboratory exchange and to inform policies that promote the exchange of structured test results among laboratories and ordering providers.

ONC and its partner NORC at the University of Chicago are administering this mail survey through May 17. For those receiving a copy of the survey, ASCP encourages your participation in this important research. For more information or to find out if your laboratory has been selected to participate, please email or call the toll free number: 800.975.2754. Survey results will be published this summer to
