There are twenty-nine ASCP BOC certification and qualification examinations currently available that span the spectrum of medical laboratory and pathology specialties. Effective July 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recognized the ASCP BOC SCT certification as an approved board examination for individuals to meet the CLIA personnel qualifications of 42 CFR 493.1483. This approval is inclusive of all SCT(ASCP) credential holders, including those who tested under Route 3 prior to July 2024. With this approval, all CT(ASCP) and SCT(ASCP) credential holders are recognized in the CLIA personnel qualifications of 42 CFR 493.1483. This is a significant win for all ASCP BOC credentialed cytologists and the patients they serve.

Qualification in Biorepository Science, QBRS

An applicant must be able to verify that they meet all eligibility requirements, including education, training, and/or experience. For complete information, see the “Documentation” section of the website, and/or the links under “Applicant Resources” on the right hand side of this page.

To be eligible for this examination category, an applicant must satisfy the minimum requirements (for degrees, the stated degree or higher) of at least one of the following routes:

Education does not need to be from the U.S. A degree from a non-U.S. institution must be verified as equivalent to a U.S. degree which will be determined by an acceptable transcript evaluation.

Route 1
  • Valid technologist/scientist (ASCP or ASCPi) or specialist (ASCP or ASCPi) certification,
  • AND one year of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last five years.

***For the purposes of the QBRS credential, specimens are procured only from humans or other animals. A biorepository is defined as a formally managed physical or virtual entity that may receive, process, store, and/or distribute specimens and/or samples and their associated data as appropriate in support of current or future use. All repositories should be planned, organized, and managed in accordance with applicable ethical and legal frameworks and comply with national/federal, regional, and local regulations.

Route 2
  • Baccalaureate degree* from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university with a major in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or a related field, OR a baccalaureate degree* from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree,
  • AND two years of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last five years.

*The foreign degree must be equivalent to a U.S. degree which will be determined by an acceptable transcript evaluation.

**Accredited Colleges and Universities

Route 3
  • Master’s degree* from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university with a major in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or a related field,
  • AND one year of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last five years.

Route 4
  • Valid technician certification (ASCP or ASCPi),
  • AND two years of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last five years.

Route 5
  • An associate degree* or two-year diploma* from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, OR 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry,
  • AND three years of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last six years.

Route 6

As of October 1, 2023, QBRS Route 6, requiring high school graduation and five years of experience, has been discontinued.

Route 7
  • Master’s degree* from an accredited (regionally or nationally)** college/university in biobanking or biorepository science,
  • AND a minimum of six months of full time acceptable experience in a biorepository*** within the last five years. This experience may be obtained within, or outside of, the degree program.

Biorepository Experience

To fulfill the experience requirement for the Qualification in Biorepository Science, you must have experience within the time frame required in at least 4 of the 9 following areas:

  • Subject Consent
  • Specimen/Data Collection
  • Specimen/Data De-identification
  • Specimen/Data Processing
  • Sample/Data Storage
  • Sample/Data Distribution
  • Sample/Data Quality Control
  • Equipment Quality Control (e.g., maintenance, validation, calibration)
  • Enhanced Technical Areas (e.g., histology, tissue microarray, slide imaging, microdissection, viable cell isolation, nucleic acid/protein extraction)

Role of a QBRS

Biorepository Science (QBRS)
Professionals involved in any phase of a formally managed biospecimen collection, including specimen processing and storage, data management, laboratory safety, compliance, and business operations. Works in various areas of the biobank, which may include consenting, collecting samples, and assessing the acceptability of samples. May process samples to include centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and shipping.
