Program directors, educators, laboratory and education administrators, and the laboratory community are encouraged to register for a 90-minute webinar on Sept. 13, beginning at 12 p.m. ET, to discuss a standardized nomenclature for programs teaching medical laboratory science at the bachelor’s degree level.
The webinar is a collaboration of ASCP, the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) and the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). It will be moderated by Susan Harrington, PhD, D(ABMM), MASCP, MLS(ASCP)CM, Chair of the ASCP Workforce Steering Committee and a past Chair of the ASCP BOC.
The webinar will describe the current landscape of educational programs and degree titles and present the case for alignment to use of the medical laboratory science nomenclature. Focusing on the university-based program, a leading educator will present the process experienced when changing from clinical laboratory science (CLS) to an MLS program and degree name. Best practices, stumbling blocks, and places to find support will be considered. The last portion of the program will be devoted to discussion with invited guests and attendees so that all may benefit from shared experience.
The goal is to create a model for all educational programs to follow, which will allow for a cohesive name, providing standardization to the profession and promoting recruitment of students. Presenters will include representatives of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), the ASCP Board of Certification (ASCP BOC), and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
