Help Foster a Culture of Appreciation. Nominate a Colleague for an ASCP Award

April 12, 2023

Nominating a colleague for an award is one of the most powerful ways to affirm their contributions to their profession. “To be recognized by your peers is huge,” Anne Walsh-Feeks, MS, PA(ASCP)CM, chair of ASCP’s Awards Committee.

The ASCP Awards Committee is currently accepting nominations for the 2023 Annual Awards, which recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to pathology and laboratory medicine. Nominations are due by May 8. The awards include:

Mastership
Member Lifetime Achievement
Member Excellence in Education
Member Excellence in Management
Member Mentorship Award
H.P. Smith Award for Distinguished Pathology Educator
Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service
Ward Burdick Award
Philip Levine Award for Outstanding Research
Medical Student Award

The honorees will be recognized at the ASCP 2023 Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA, on Friday, October 20.

Ms. Walsh-Feeks strongly encourages ASCP members to think about recognizing someone who has been doing outstanding work. She recalls the exhilarating sensation of being named recipient of the ASCP 2022 Excellent in Management Award, which was presented at the ASCP Annual Meeting last September.

“It was an incredible surprise,” she says. “It was validation of all that I have done. My background is as a pathologists’ assistant. Throughout my career, I have always managed people. On a given day, I may have a mile-long list of things to do and if an HR issue arises, that comes first. You have to support your team.”

She has also been an active ASCP volunteer, serving on commissions and committees, and holding numerous leadership positions, including chair of the Commission on Science, Technology and Public Policy, being the first non-physician member of the ASCP Board of Directors, serving as Board Treasurer, and now chairing the ASCP Foundation while also chairing the Annual Awards Committee.

She emphasizes that the person making the nomination experiences just as much joy and fulfillment as the person they are nominating. As an example, she recalled recently nominating someone for the ASCP 40 Under Forty recognition. Ms. Walsh-Feeks reached out to let that person know she was going to nominate them. That colleague responded that she was speechless and was so appreciative just to be nominated. Ms. Walsh-Feeks was gratified just to have made her colleague’s day.

So, please take a moment to think about how your colleagues are making a difference in their profession and nominate them for the ASCP Annual Awards. You’ll make their day, and yours!
