Supported by the ASCP Foundation
The ASCP Foundation Carter Stephen Ainsworth Health Policy Summer Fellowship offers students the opportunity to serve as ASCP Health Policy Interns, working primarily with staff in the ASCP Institute for Science, Technology and Public Policy (ISTP) and receiving hands-on experience and insight into the synergies of science, policy, and practice in laboratory medicine.
This fellowship was created in memory of Carter Stephen Ainsworth, a Clemson University student from Charleston, South Carolina, who served as an intern for the ASCP ITSP.

Carter Stephen Ainsworth was from Charleston, South Carolina, and attended Clemson University from 2012-2016 where he received a posthumous Bachelor of Science degree in biology in May 2017. Carter excelled in his field of biology at Clemson and earned a 4.0 in his major putting him on the President’s list. The Clemson University President called Carter “a treasure to Clemson who will be sorely missed.” Carter was an intern for ASCP in Washington, D.C., where he worked on health policy and advocacy. He was excited about continuing his education by attending medical school and had planned to become a physician and continue to help others in health care in the future.
