The Cell Bowl is a lively, interactive competition between medical laboratory science programs nationwide that culminates in the Super Cell Bowl for the Varsity league and the Second Chance Showdown for the Junior Varsity league.
The program tests the scientific knowledge of MLS and MLT students with team competitions that enhance their knowledge of blood cell morphology and build their professional networks (all while preparing them for the ASCP Board of Certification exams).
Participating students must be ASCP student members. Not a member? Membership is free for laboratory students.
Program Directors, the Cell Bowl is a fun way for your students to prepare for their exams. Encourage their participation!
ASCP is the top-tier sponsor and supporter of the Cell Bowl. Medical Lab Lady Gill is the nucleus of the Cell Bowl: this program is courtesy of her imagination and implementation.
We at ASCP think this competition is such a fantastic experience for students and program directors that we enthusiastically support the continuation and expansion of the Cell Bowl.
ASCP’s Council of Laboratory Professionals is highly involved, with many of its members offering support in the form of planning and social media.
Medical Lab Lady Gill and ASCP have teamed up to prepare Clinical Laboratory students for the Board of Certification Exam in an engaging way! Institutional teams of MLT and MLS students will compete in a national tournament to achieve the highest CellQuiz score using the FREE CellaVision CellAtlas app (found in your device’s app store). Programs will battle it out weekly to have a chance to compete in the Super Cell Bowl!
The Cell Bowl will include a team from each participating institution in the United States. Each institution will have one team no matter the type of program(s) represented. There is no team size limit. All participating students must have FREE ASCP Student Membership.
Any student with a perfect score whose time is shorter than Medical Lab Lady Gill’s perfect score can enter to win MLLG lab swag in the Perfect Score event.
Each week, the Program Director or faculty member will submit their team’s highest score, a screenshot of the score, any pictures of the event they want in the weekly coverage video, and the cell lines their team had trouble with that week (users can select the red sections on their score display’s pie chart to get this information). Teams will compete within their region for the three weeks. Each region’s top three programs will then move on to the national event (week 4: Varsity Play-offs or Second Chance Junior Varsity Leagues) where they will compete against other programs in their league. Week 5 is the Semi-finals where the top three scoring teams of week 5 compete to see who will go on to the Super Cell Bowl (Varsity) or Second Chance Showdown (Junior Varsity)! The two top-scoring teams in both leagues from week 5 will battle it out in week 6 to be the winner of the Super Cell Bowl or Second Chance Showdown!
Any student with a perfect score whose time is shorter than Medical Lab Lady Gill’s perfect score of 58895.00 seconds can enter to win Medical Lab Lady Gill lab swag. Winners will be randomly selected during weeks 2 through 6 and posted on the Cell Bowl webpage and Medical Lab Lady Gill X and YouTube accounts. Winners must submit their full name and address in the Google form to claim their winnings. Submit your score once and be entered to win the entire seven weeks!
The Super Cell Bowl winning institution will receive a trophy, the ASCP BOC Study Guide and Interactive Practice Exam Bundle, and individual participant certificates. The institution will be featured in ASCP’s Critical Values and will take part in a live interview with Medical Lab Lady Gill on her YouTube channel where viewers can ask questions about the program! The Second Chance Showdown winning team will take a virtual fieldtrip to CellAVision Headquarters and have some publicity!
