On April 27, the American Medical Association (AMA) urged the Trump Administration to develop a National Strategy much like ASCP’s recent recommendation. In a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Admiral Brett Giroir, MD, the AMA called for a national strategy that encourages the federal government to exert stronger leadership to help clinical laboratories acquire testing components that are in short supply. Many of the themes touched upon in the AMA letter parallel ASCP’s recommendations, such as providing “greater clarity and transparency around existing testing capacity,” increasing communication between the federal government, states and laboratories; ensuring clinical laboratories are adequately resourced; and providing appropriate review and guidance on the use of serological testing. ASCP has been working with the AMA's White House staff and is pleased to see the AMA's call for increased federal coordination.
