Meaningful Pathologist Inclusion in APMs Urged by ASCP

June 10, 2021

On May 25, ASCP joined with the American Medical Association and other medical specialty societies in recommending improvements to the design and implementation of alternative payment models (APMs) by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations (CMMI).

ASCP recognizes and appreciates CMMI’s commitment to considering various approaches to health care transformation. We encourage CMMI to consider a more coordinated, stakeholder-driven process to provide physicians with the opportunity to participate in APMs that accurately reflect the kinds of patients they treat. ASCP also believes that APMs are uniquely positioned to help reduce health inequities by achieving better health outcomes for high-risk patients.

Pathologists should be afforded an opportunity to participate and succeed in APMs. ASCP welcomes the opportunity to continue to engage with CMMI on this issue in the future.
