CDC Announces Major Reorganization

August 26, 2022

On August 17, Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced a major reorganization of the Agency. The reorganization is intended to address significant criticism that the Agency has not responded quickly enough to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and Monkeypox.

Dr. Walensky’s goal is to accelerate the Agency’s response to public health crises, improve its ability to work with other branches of government, and simplify the Agency’s website to remove overlapping and contradictory public health guidance. As part of the reorganization, the CDC’s Division of Laboratory Science will now report directly to Dr. Walensky. This will hold the Division more accountable and is intended to expedite the release of its work to the public.
