Overview of FDA Laboratory Developed Test Final Rule
Laboratories that are involved in developing their own assays in house should expect a cumbersome, time consuming, and expensive approval process by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In this article, ASCP policy staff do a deep dive in analyzing the impact of the FDA’s recently approved Final Rule, which claims regulatory authority over Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs). Additionally, ASCP will host a free Town Hall on May 21 to inform ASCP members about the ramifications of the Final Rule. Read more.

AMA Physician Practice Input Needed to Assess Payment Accuracy
 The American Medical Association is working on a survey to collect data on practice costs and time. The Physician Practice Information (PPI) Survey will gather accurate data on practice costs and the hours of patient care that physicians provide to support fair and accurate physician payment. The PPI Survey is open through June 30, 2024, and is being managed by Mathematica. Read more.

ASCP Reaffirms its Support for DEI Initiatives
ASCP has reaffirmed its support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. ASCP’s initiative came in response to legislation, recently introduced in Congress by Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) and Representative Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC), prohibiting medical schools from receiving Federal funding, including participation in Federal student loan programs, if they engage in any DEI activities and/or provide education on structural or institutional racism. Simply establishing or maintaining a DEI office may be sufficient to bar the medical school from providing federal student loans to their students. Read more.

ASCP Endorses Congressional Resolution Supporting DEI
ASCP recently endorsed a congressional resolution, House Resolution 1140, affirming congressional support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs and academic freedom at medical education institutions. Read more.
