CBO Projects US Uninsured Rate Will Rise From 7.7% To 8.9% Over Next Decade
June 20, 2024
Reuters (6/18, Niasse) reported the CBO on Tuesday forecast “the rate of Americans who are uninsured will rise to 8.9% over the next decade from 7.7% in 2024, driven by rising immigration and reduced eligibility for 19-to-24 year-olds following federal government policy changes.” The CBO found “most of the decline in uninsured will happen in the next two years,” and “between 2027 and 2034 the rate of uninsured should stabilize at around 9%.” However, this figure, “representing 32 million people, is lower than pre-pandemic levels due to a projected older U.S. population.” Modern Healthcare (6/18, Early, Subscription Publication) reported, “At least 23 million people lost benefits during the Medicaid redeterminations process that began in April 2023, which resulted in an increase in the uninsured rate that is expected to persist.”
