COVID-19 Vaccination During Pregnancy Not Linked To Increased Major Birth Defect Risk, Study Finds

April 09, 2025

Healio (4/8, Kellner) reports a study found that “COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy was not associated with major structural birth defects.” Study researchers “found no difference in the prevalence of birth defects between people who were and were not vaccinated. They also did not find a difference in safety outcomes between the two manufacturers of COVID-19 messenger RNA vaccines, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech.” Researchers concluded, “Studies from Israel, Scotland, Scandinavia and the U.S. have similarly found no link between COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and birth defects. Thus, our findings are consistent with previously published research.” The study was published in Pediatrics.
