If you work in the clinical laboratory, check out ASCP’s
Inside the Lab podcast. Hear from experts on timely topics, from how to reduce the carbon footprint in the clinical laboratory to expanding diversity and inclusion efforts in the lab and how antimicrobial-resistant organisms are changing the way we practice medicine.
“
Inside the Lab podcasts is now in its second season and offers an opportunity for everyone to learn something new. You can do it while you are going for a run, sitting on a plane or wherever you are at the moment,” says Kelly Swails, MT(ASCP) web editor of Lab Medicine, who co-hosts the podcasts with ASCP Chief Medical Officer Dan Milner, MD, FASCP, MSc(Epi), and Lotte Mulder, PhD, ASCP Senior Manager, Organizational Leadership and Patient Engagement.
Each episode features three to four guests discussing topics that are geared toward pathologists, medical laboratory professionals and pathologists’ assistants. The podcasts are free and listeners are eligible to receive CME credit.
Inside the Lab covers are range of topics. Personnel management will focus on managing laboratory staff, how administrators can navigate difficult situations in the laboratory, as well as the current wave of retirements and ways to improve recruitment and retention.
On the subject of microbial resistance, infectious disease experts discuss the increasing prevalence of microbial resistance and how it will change the way that medicine is practiced.
“We are starting to get organisms that are resistant to all the antibiotics that are available,” Ms. Swails explains. “During the podcast, we’ll ask about the efforts that labs, both nationally and locally, are participating in to combat this emerging resistance.”
Another podcast that focuses on reducing the carbon footprint in clinical laboratories will feature the co-authors of a report,
Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Gastrointestinal Biopsies in a Surgical Pathology Laboratory, published in
AJCP. They will discuss strategies laboratories can do to re-use and reduce carbon waste and how effective test utilization plays an important role in limiting waste produced in the medical laboratory.
“Overall, these Inside the Lab podcasts offer a great way to broaden your worldview and take advantage of expertise without having to travel to a conference,” Ms. Swails says.
