Almost 70 medical specialty associations, including ASCP, recently
wrote leaders of the House and Senate Appropriation Committees to urge the inclusion of the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act (H.R. 2256/S. 834) into the House and Senate reconciliation measures, which will be the principal funding bill for CY 2022.
Congressional legislators have already been working on a proposal to provide scholarships to encourage individuals from underrepresented communities to attend medical school. In addition to this, ASCP is urging legislative leaders to include the legislative provisions of the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act in the final reconciliation bill as well. These provisions would help alleviate the physician shortage by providing 14,000 new Medicare-supported GME positions.
