The Council of Laboratory Professionals has made great strides this past year toward its goals to raise the visibility of the laboratory profession, recruit more individuals to pursue careers in the laboratory, and develop strategies to retain current laboratory staff in their health system. Outgoing CLP Chair Michelle Campbell, MS, MLS(ASCP)CMMBCMSCCM, reflects on the council’s work over the last year and shares her thoughts for the future.

“We have subcommittees working to bolster recruitment and retention of laboratory professions,” she says. For recruitment efforts, they are focused on ways to identify laboratory science programs that have vacancies and are trying to connect students who are interested in applying to laboratory professional programs with those vacancies.

They are also working on a laboratory care model, similar to what other healthcare professions have, by spelling out what laboratory professionals and pathologists stand for in the work that we do and how we care for patients. “It is elevating the role of our laboratory professionals and pathologists among our colleagues.”

Lastly, ASCP’s Career Ambassadors group is working to create opportunities to connect with the volunteer ambassadors so that they can share best practices.

Ms. Campbell says the CLP has a very strong group of volunteer leaders who are working hard to ensure the council’s efforts going forward are a success.
